Physical Web Would Connect Millions of Items

Project Would Expand Ability to Interact With Lack of Apps

“The number of smart devices is going to explode, and the assumption that each new device will require it’s own application just isn’t realistic,” the company explains on the GitHub site. “We need a system that lets anyone interact with any device at any time. The Physical Web isn’t about replacing native apps: it’s about enabling interaction when native apps just aren’t practical.”

Google is looking at a wide range of potential interactive items listing toys, posters and cars as potential targets for the Physical Web. These items should be easily accessed, the site explains, and are just “a tap away.”

As it stands, the site explains, things are prohibitive with an app seeming “backward.” Once unleashed, The Physical Web will unlock potential including, for example, a bus stop telling commuters when the next bus is scheduled to arrive.

Essentially, what the project would do, it is explained in the introduction document, is expand the Web beyond computer screens and devices in to the physical world.

“This involves creating an open ecosystem where smart devices can broadcast URLs into the area around them. Any nearby display such as a phone or tablet can then see these URLs and offer them up to the user,” the site reports.

It may seem far fetched but, as reported by Tech Crunch, experts are banking on the number of Smart devices to drastically increase in the coming years. Cisco is predicting, by 2020, there will be 50 billion Internet-connected devices.

If that number is accurate, the Physical Web could entangle millions of items.
